Help Alleviate the Financial Burden on Families Seeking Critical After-School Programs

Many adults are returning to work in the aftermath of the COVID pandemic. Families are struggling not only to make ends meet but they are also having to make difficult choices when it comes to the affordability of afterschool programming for their children.

After-school programming provides structure, physical activity, social support, and more. Without this structure and support, many are left home alone where they are exposed to peer pressure, experimental drug use, obesity, and a whole host of other issues.

According to the 2010 census, the average median income for a family of four in the neighborhood surrounding the Delavan Grider Community Center is $17,289. With the rising cost of food, rent and basic needs, the cost of childcare is often beyond the reach for families.

Metro Community Development Corporation provides year-round academic, social, recreational programming to youth aged five through eighteen years of age at the Delavan Grider Community Center, located at 877 East Delavan Avenue 14215.

What you may not realize is that most people in our immediate neighborhood are working in low-wage jobs, participating in social service programs to receive aid and support, and even the family portion to be paid is unaffordable and out-of-reach for many of our families. Plus, some families have more than one child which adds an extra financial burden and with the recent rise in inflation, all families are feeling the pinch.

That's why we need your assistance in making after-school programming affordable for more families in the community so that their kids get a good foundation and are able to flourish because they can participate in activities, that they would not normally be able to because of the cost.

We need your help today. COVID has caused even more disruption in households such as lack of food, increase in people having difficulty communicating, domestic issues have risen by 500%, mal-treatment and abuse have increased by 75%.
